Always nice to find a Samuel Smith pub! This one is a bit old-fashioned and boring (if clean) in décor - but you go to a boozer for the beers, and Samuel Smith beers, while not real ales, are always recommended. If you are a lager boy, you will find no less than four different types - of which their "Pure Brewed Organic Lager" is the strongest - and the best by quite a margin. The ale lover will find the "Old Brewery Bitter" to their liking. But Samuel Smith offers draught and bottled beers of ANY variety: Milds, stouts, fruit beers and ciders.
The one thing that's special is the Organic Wheat - the *only* British-brewed German style cloudy wheat beer that actually tastes like a German style cloudy wheat beer! They co-operated with the Hofbäu brewery some years ago, and apparently they kept the recipe.
So if Samuel Smith beers are your thing, you can't go wrong with The Jolly Sailors (often listed erroneously as The Jolly Sailor, singular). -

This is one of your typical Sam Smiths Pubs, no frills just good honest beer at a good honest price (£1.50) per pint, no alcho-pops and other trimmings.
There is a beer garden well more of a yard at the rear and on the inside is the typical could do with a lick of paint Sam smith's interior, complete with Sam Smiths typical Characters.
This place is just on the side of the Harbour and I for one would certainly call again after all I am a secret Sam Smiths fan. -

Samuel Smith's lager, what would whitby be like without it?
This is the place to go in two frequently occurring intances.
For the quieter (possably hungover) days, when all you really want is a few quiet pints to reflect in on ones self.
Or, for the poverty stricen, £10 to-your-name night's when our old friend sammy can make it stretch. Granted the decor is the old fashioned sammy smith pub style, but upstairs in the dining area it is a bit more modern, with a suprisingly good view of East cliff and the harbour.
Furthermore, one thing that will hit you in a heartbeat, is that you will find a lot more people in the beer garden (located at the rear) than you will inside. Very nice people in the summertime as well, I must say.
All in all, for locals and budget holidaymakers alike this is the one you'll find yourself in again and again. -

good honest seaside pub. a bit dingy. a bit grotty. but great sam smiths ales at amazingly cheap prices. not quite so good or popular since sam smiths lost/took away they're license for live music though which is a shame.
